U.S. Women Business Owners are a Major Economic Force

New and exciting research commissioned and underwritten by the National Women's Business Council, Center for Women's Business Research and Wal-Mart reveals women at the helm of their businesses have the economic impact of nearly three trillion dollars in the U.S. economy. About 8% of the total U.S. labor force works directly for a woman-owned firm according to the new study. If U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, they would have a greater GDP than Canada, India and Vietnam combined. The new research from the Center for Women's Business Research does not rely on Census data, but new methodology to reveal a different glimpse of “women’s work”. The study introduced at the Women Impacting Public Policy Summit reveals more historic facts about women at the head of their own enterprises:

  • Women-owned firms produce employment for more than 23 million people in the United States, or 16% of our 2008 workforce.
  • Approximately 8% of the total labor force work directly for a woman-owned firm
  • There are 175 countries with less population than the number women-owned firms employ (directly and indirectly); there are 150 countries with less population than the number of people women-owned firms employ directly!
  • If U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, they would have the 5th largest GDP in the world, trailing closely behind Germany, and ahead of countries including France, United Kingdom and Italy.

Women’s Purchasing Patterns Focus of Upcoming Report
Women and their purchasing power are the focus of a comprehensive research project to be released later this month. NBC Universal, the Center for American Progress, Hewlett-Packard, the Rockefeller Foundation and the USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy are working together on the study which reportedly indicates women are far more involved with the purchase of items such as cars and pricey consumer-electronics devices than ever before! The official release will come in a weeklong series beginning October 18th, 2009 and airing on NBC's Meet the Press, CNBC, and Telemundo.
