Warning to Beware of Pop-Ads Warning of Computer Threats

There is a warning today to small business owners and their staff to beware of Web pop-up ads warning of a computer virus.   Recent research finds these pop-up Internet ads warning computer threats are actually a way for crooks to imbed millions of computers with fake software to steal sensitive financial information.

The report from Symantec Corp. says criminals are using fake security software on tens of millions of U.S. computers for financial gain and identity theft. The bogus warnings show up when users are on legitimate Web sites and often offer "security" software that is actually used to steal personal information such as credit card numbers. Symantec said it found 250 varieties of scam security software bearing safe-sounding names including Antivirus 2010 and SpywareGuard 2008.

Symantec researchers found about 43 million attempted downloads in one year!
